GREAT TURN OUT!

Christmas Parade December 3rd - Uniquely Rustique has contacted area businesses to see if they would like to have a lightbulb made with their company name on them. They have the lightbulbs cut out and will be painting the names on them. Afterwards, they will be having Frontier Community College laminate them for stability and shine. Cost is $5.00. Please contact them if you are interested at 618 842-3544. Also, there will be 10 elf jackets and hats available for walkers in the parade.

Santa this year is Bob Moore. Traditionally the Retail Merchants pays 1/4, Chamber pays the other 1/4 and the city pays 1/2 of the expenses. Flo is to contact the Mayor to confirm their contribution.

With expected expenses, the group decided to contiue the traditional Christmas Shopping Spree. This year entrees may be collected starting Monday November 21st through Sunday December 18th. All entrees must be collected and will be taken to WFIW for a live drawing on Monday December 19th. There will be three lucky winners....1st prize of $250.00, 2nd prize of $150.00 and 3rd prize of $100.00. All prize money will be in "Chamber Bucks." For businesses opened through the weekend you will need to get entrees to either Carnaby Square or Thea's before they close. Any questions, please contact Flo Simpson at 618-842-6116.

Holiday Open House - Chamber will be sending letters to Wayne County School kids Kindergarten up to 4th grade, letting them know that Mrs. Claus and her elves will be at the chamber from 1 to 3pm on Sunday November 20th. They will be providing cookies and hot chocolate and help the children write letters to Santa. There will be 6 elves that will be out passing out flyers with a list of chamber retail merchants hours and a list of any specials. If you are participating in this event, please contact Flo Simpson at 618-842-6116 with the details. These elves will be paired off, with 2 stationed downtown, 2 stationed midtown and 2 stationed west of town. They will have a 1 hour rotationing shift in each location.

The spend it in Fairfield ads will be ran during the holiday season to encourage shoppers to buy locally.

Festival of Lights will open up immediately after the Christmas Parade. If any business is interested in volunteering to be a greeter, during the holiday season, contact Kristi at Carnaby Square.

October 5, 2011

Members present: Patti Bowels (B-Way Design & Decorating), Mary Jon Lehr (Farmer's Daugther, Kathy Bricket (Wayne County Broadcasting), Kristi Hornung (Carnaby Square), Phyllis Yohe (Memories Antique Gallery), Lavon Gill (Fairfield National Bank), Anita Tipps (Serendipity Cards & Gifts)

At this point very few people have picked up entry forms for the Scavenger Hunt. There are a few that have split up the task with a partner. They are going to half of the stores and made their own copy. May want to reconsider doing it differently.

Flo reported that we haven't received entrees for the Pumpkin Decorating Contest yet. In the past it was towards the end of the week. Flo will contact Julie and have her contact Mrs. Kent to help in the judging.

Holiday Open House - Sunday November 20th - 1pm-5pm - Center Street School may be bringing their Choir to sign that day. Flo will contact the Lori Robson at the high school about having the elves walk the streets  this year. The Chamber has decided to have cookies, hot chocolate and hot apple cider and Mrs. Claus and her elves to aide in the celebration. Flo will be printing up flyers for the elves to be distributing. Any business that will be participating in the Holiday Open House, Sunday November 20, needs to call the chamber at 618 842-6116 and inform what hours they will be open. If they want to offer discount coupons, please provide that information or the actual coupon. We will have the elves distribute them for you.

Christmas Parade Idea. Again Jamie & Nicki Roethe of Uniquely Rustique has taken the reigns on creating the christmas parade entry.

This year the idea is Holiday Lights strong on a heavy cord or rope. Each light bulb will have a business name and will be lite up, with battery lights. The cost for each business is $10.00. Each business wanting to participate needs to commit to the cost of $10.00 plus provide at least 1 walker, additional walkers if you choose to pass out treats (discount coupons, candy, ...etc). If you are interested please contact Jami or Nicki at 618 842-3544 or email them at rustique2@frontier.com . They are looking for willing volunteers to help cut out the light bulbs and if anyone has a fairly heavy rope to use as the light bulb cord.

Anita Tipps explained their Witches Night Out event, October 18th from 6:00 to 8:00pm. It is geared to allowing women, as well as men, the opportunity to come shop of an evening. They will give out prizes to the best dressed witch, as well as light refreshments. Anita said that in Lebanon, IL the entire community has a witch's night out promotion and is a big hit. We may want to consider this next October and have a witch's walk. (Food for Thought)

Next Meeting we will discuss how much money we have left to use for the possible Holiday Shopping Spree. Flo will have the latest update, as well as, how much we need to pay for Santa. Please try to attend the November 2nd meeting!

June 1, 2011

Members present: Nicki & Jami Roethe (Uniquely Rustique), Patti Bowels (B-Way Design & Decorating), Mary Jon Lehr (Farmer's Daughter), Kristi Hornung (Carnaby Square), Kathy Bircket (Wayne County Broadcasting, WFIW/WOKZ)

Flo Simpson reported that we have 101 (K-4th grade entrees) 31 (5th - 8th grade entrees) and 1 (High School - Adult entree). There has been a request that if we do this next year to allow the schools more time in getting this done. Flo is to get the 3 family swim passes to be given away.

Jami & Nicki reported that there will be 66 names and spots on the map for individuals participating in the city wide yard sale on June 18th. They also said that had to turn at least 10 additional people down, due to the maps were already printed. They will be distributing these maps and a poster to place on your door one week prior to the event. If you would like a poster and maps to hand out please let Jami, Nicki or I know.

July promotions were discussed and decided to do the Wayne County Fair promotion again this year. The retail merchants will be accepting entrees from July 5th - 11th and need to get the entrees to the Chamber of Commerce Office by Tuesday July 12th. Flo will draw 2 names for each of the following events: Tractor Pull, Motor Cross, and Demo Derby. Each of the names drawn will receive 2 grand stand tickets. If you are interested in participating in this promotion please contact Flo, so she can get a poster for your door.

It was also discussed that instead of always giving things away to do something instead. They mentioned the idea that once a month on the radio and in the newspaper to do an ad promoting the Chamber Members as a whole, spelling out the benefits the general public receives from the tax dollars generated from the sales produced in Fairfield. Also thanking your customers for their patronage from local and surrounding areas. Flo is to come up with several different ads to be decided on at the July 6th meeting. Please come and be a part of the decision making.

Next month start thinking about the promotion for August. Looking at the possibilities of having customers who spend $10.00 or more be entered into a drawing giving away a Kindle. Similar to the Holiday Open House promotion a couple of years ago, for every $10.00 a customer spend, their name will be entered into the drawing. The more they spend at local businesses, the greater the chance of winning.

Everyone was in accordance that the Holiday Open House was a success. Reports from the general public was, that all stores worked together as one. If a store didn't offer the product they wanted, they in turn let them know who did. Great Job Everyone!

It was also brought up by Kristi Hornung that the Retail Merchants Meetings has grown over the past year and would like to set up a person who is willing to take the reigns. At the meeting no one wanted to step up to the job. This is still open.

Kristi also expressed her gratitude that more businesses are getting involved. The Roethe Twins has contributed greatly, by taking charge of the Christmas Parade entry and has won 3 years in a row. With so many different businesses present, the new or improved promotions are bound to be discussed, so we encourage all businesses to come to the meetings and have your ideas heard. If you are unable to attend, please submit your ideas to Flo at the Chamber and she will forward them on.

The next big promotions will be the Valentine Basket Give-A-Way. This promotion will kick-off on February 1st and will run through February 10th. All entries must be turned into Thea, Kristi or Flo by 5pm on Thursday February 10th. The drawing will be held live at the Fairfield Mules Boy's Basketball Game February 11th, half-time show. All entrees must be 18 years or older to participate. If your business wants to contribute the the basket, please bring your donation to the Chamber Office by Monday January 24th. Letters went out to all Chamber members asking for donations. Goal is to have a basket worth 1000.00, if possible. There will be an additional meeting this month on Wednesday January 26th to wrap up the donations into one basket. A picture will be taken and flyers will be produced and distributed to all participating businesses. The flyers will consist of a picture of the basket as well as the list of contents and the sponsoring businesses. We would love to see you at the meeting located at the Chamber Office at 121 East Main at 8:00am sharp.

Discussion of the Pumpkin Decorating contest sponsored by the Retail Merchants was made. Kristi said the Pumpkin Festival overall was a huge success. You had 6 entries in the Ages 6-10 and the 18 and over, with only 3 entries in the 11-17 age range. There may have not been many in volume, however the quality and workmanship was excellent. Kristi ask for feedback as to question if this would be an annual sponsorship. No decision was made.

The Roethe twins reported that they have the supplies for area business to make up the Christmas tags, to be attached to the big presents on the Christmas Float. They have made a peace sign for the float and asked to make sure it would not offend anyone. It was discussed and agreed upon that the peace sign would be fine. The cost is $3.00 covering the cost of material and lights. It was decided that any business that wants to participate purchase gum to be given out during the parade. They also requested walkers to help give out the candy that night. If anyone has time to help contact Uniquely Rustique.

Open house will be Sunday November 21st, area business will be responsible for their own individual ads in the press. If enough business book with the press the retail merchants will pay for the heading. The Chamber of Commerce will be open that Sunday from 1 to 4pm. If they can arrange for Elf costumes, they are to be parading the streets to encourage shopping. It was requested that some of them be stationed in midtown as well as Westport Plaza area. Also Kristi reported that Center Street School's band & music teacher will have Christmas Carolers out at Freedom Park that day from 2pm - 3pm.

Balance of 1659.80 remaining will be used for advertising for the Holiday Open House and a Shopping Spree contest. 100 will be used for Santa and 500 will be earmarked for the Shopping Spree. The remaining 1000.00 will be used for radio and press ads. Kathy Bircket will be looking into packages to find the best deal. It was also decided that advertising with Flora, Carmi and 96 the Vine would be a good idea. The shopping spree will consist of 3 winners: 250, 150 and 100 chamber bucks. Area businesses that want to participate need to have a box out starting November 26th through December 17th/18th. All entries must be taken to Kristi or Thea for the drawing will be held Monday December 20, at 8:00am on the Morning Show.

September 1, 2010

Members present: Niki & Jami Roethe (Uniquely Rustique), Stephen Vaughan (Wal-Mart), Doyle Hucker (Hometown IGA), Patti Bowles (B-Way Design), Thea Gain (Thea Gift's & Framing), Melissa Garrison (Your Flower Shop), Mary Jon Lehr (Farmers Daughter), and Kristi Hornung (Carnaby Square).

The old business discussed was the swim party. Phyllis Hilliard will contact the Retail Merchants next year, to see if they want to do a combined event.

Asked for ideas for the month of September. Decided to let Fun Fest be on it's own and each individual store in charge of their own promotion.

Deciding to be a sponsor for the Pumpkin Festival event on October 23rd. Looking at sponsoring the Pumpkin decorating contest. Mary Jon is contacting the Shreve's Pumpkin Patch as well as Bullards, to see if they will donate pumpkins.

Looking at changing the categories: 4 age groups with 3 different levels of prizes. Would like to use chamber bucks for the prizes. Will make final decision next month on the prize amounts.

Also looking at doing something with the Make a Difference Day, since the Pumpkin Fest, Make & Difference Day and the Mule Backers Lance Miller Concert are all on the October 23rd.

Suggestions were made to donate a % percentage of proceeds of sales on October 23rd to the Make A Difference Day. However, it was tabled. They are leaning more to a set amount and not a %. Beside, they  would like to get more details of the charity or charities the Make A Difference Day is going to.

Brenda from Simply Hers called in with a suggestion. That all stores have a drawing for a prize donated by each individual store. To enter in the give-a-way, they would have to pay $1.00. All proceeds then would go to the High School Sports Reinstatement.

VPF - Volunteers for a Progressive Fairfield would like to invite everyone to help out on September 11th City Sidewalk cleanup day. El Mexicano is going to work on cleaning up their alleyway, and the city is to spray the weeds between Jemini's and Dawkins for easy cleanup. Bring your trash bags and rakes or brooms. They will be serving donuts and coffee at Jemini at 6:30am for all workers. A special invitation for help went out the High School organizations.

One last note of interest, it is time to think of the Christmas Parade. Jami & Niki reported that they still have the supplies to do a Christmas Card for the businesses, similar to last years float. They reported that it worked out well and that the Retail Merchants won 2 years in a row.

Discussion about a back to school promotion was bounced around. Decided to sponsor a community event, such as a free swim or free skate. Final decision was a "FREE SWIM". This way all ages could enjoy.

After further investigation, it was decided to table the "Free Swim" promotion; due to the Kiwanis has scheduled a free swim for 2010. To join efforts at this late date is impossible.

Would like to kick around thoughts about sponsoring a community event during the Pumpkin Feast in late October. Please come and participated in the upcoming September 1st meeting. If you are unable to attend, but would like to voice your ideas, please contact Flo Simpson at the Chamber Office or Kristi Hornung at Carnaby Square.
